Body hair transplant

Or, in professional terminology, BHT

What is a body hair transplant?

Body hair transplantation to the scalp is a treatment option for extensive cases of baldness where the donor scalp is insufficient. One of the main limiting factors in achieving a successful result is a limited donor area.

At ChoiExpert, we recommend using body hair as an alternative donor source in such cases. It has been proven that body hair grows for a longer period when transplanted to the scalp due to the influence of the scalp dermis on the transplanted hair, known as the recipient influence. Of course, body hair can never be identical to scalp hair, but it is very useful in increasing density in these situations. Beard and chest hair are the most preferred donor areas for this type of transplantation.

So, can body hair be transplanted to the head? The answer is yes. However, this does not mean the result will be perfect. The outcomes of body hair transplantation to the scalp are not identical, and in fact, a full hair transplant cannot be performed using body hair alone, as sufficient density and quality cannot be achieved this way.

Beard follicles

As with a beard transplant, the recovery period after follicle extraction is 3 to 7 days. Since the hair does not grow back in the extracted area, the beard may appear only 20–30% thinner, with no visible gaps. Each graft contains a single or double hair follicle, similar to hair taken from the donor area of the scalp.

Because beard follicles are similar yet structurally different, they cannot be used in the frontal hairline. However, they provide very good results in the mid-scalp and crown areas.

Follicles from the chest

Following a similar style, the recovery period after extraction is 3 to 7 days. Since hair does not grow back in the extracted area, the beard may appear thinner. Because thinning after follicle extraction is only about 20–30%, it does not leave visible gaps in your beard. Beard grafts are similar to regular hair, but each graft contains a single or double hair follicle.

Since beard follicles are similar but structurally different, they cannot be used in the frontal hairline. However, they provide very good results in the mid-scalp and crown areas.

Unlike scalp hair, chest follicles may be curved to the side and slightly curly under the skin, so they must be extracted very carefully without damaging the follicle. Extracting chest hair follicles is a very demanding procedure and must only be performed by highly experienced hair surgeons. Ultimately, chest hair follicles are an option, but they are the last option a hair surgeon would consider.
